Rising Together / Kyaka II Engagement

A documented platform for child-protection awareness, youth empowerment, community participation and opportunity access in Kyaka II Refugee Settlement.

Project overview

The challenge

Young people and families in refugee and underserved communities face overlapping barriers to safe participation, education, trusted information, digital access, livelihood pathways and protection referrals.

Project goal

To strengthen youth agency, safe community participation and access to credible learning, protection and opportunity pathways through locally coordinated engagement.

Objectives

  • Mobilise and engage young people through trusted community structures
  • Strengthen youth leadership, mentoring and peer participation
  • Support child-protection awareness and safe referral
  • Improve access to education and opportunity information
  • Document community priorities responsibly for future programme design

Main activities

  • Youth and community meetings
  • Mentoring and leadership engagement
  • Child-protection awareness and referral discussions
  • Engagement with caregivers, community leaders and volunteers
  • Education and opportunity-access planning
  • Community consultation in Bwiriza Zone
  • Responsible photographic and video documentation

Implementation approach

CYEI coordinates with relevant settlement and community structures, uses youth-friendly facilitation, protects participant data and separates completed activities from proposed expansion.

Verified progress and results

  • Official permission was granted for the referenced community-based activities, subject to coordination requirements
  • Youth and community engagement has been documented through records, photographs and video
  • Bwiriza Zone youth and RWC II leadership participated in engagement at the Zone Community Centre

Partners and roles

  • Office of the Prime Minister / Department of Refugees - documented authorisation and coordination basis
  • RWC II leadership and community structures in Bwiriza Zone - local engagement

Challenges

  • A consolidated verified project report is still required
  • Current roles, dates and outcome records require confirmation before broader public claims
  • Safeguarding and referral mapping must remain current

Lessons learned

  • Trusted community entry points strengthen participation
  • Youth engagement must be linked to clear safeguarding and referral processes
  • Public communication should distinguish documented activity from planned expansion

Sustainability approach

Future phases will depend on verified local agreements, partner roles, safeguarding systems, realistic resourcing and community ownership.
